                    COMMUNITY IN ACTION

Grew up outside of Lawton in the country with grandparents and mother.

Lived in OKC during childhood

Then moved to Temple Texas with mother and got into athletics and played baseball, football, and ran. In high school my running skills began to show themselves a little bit more, especially in distance runs. I joined the cross-country team and within a few months, out ran some of the varsity guys.

I graduated 2004 from Temple High

I then went to Temple Junior College, there,
I began to get the urge to compete again and after a chat with a former high-school teammate acted on the impulse and began to train again like a runner(which I was already doing, just to keep in shape). With that, within a year I surpassed my best high-school times and managed to get faster. So, I tried out at several colleges and made several teams but after my grandfather became sick so I decided to come home to Oklahoma.

I graduated with my Assoc of Arts in Gen. Studies in 2006.

Enter Lawton Ok. I attended Cameron Univ. in Fall 06 and began competing on the Cross-Country and track team. The competition and my teammates were really fast. Kenyans were some of my teammates. Although I couldnt hold them in a race, I could hold them, and from time to time out run them in shorter distance runs during training. But later I sprained my ankle after my first season which took me out for a couple months, I had to play catch up for awhile.

As I continued running for Cameron, my coach and I found i was more adapt for middle distance runs. Distances of 800m(half-mile) and the Mile were more my arena. These distances combine speed and aerobic stamina. During track season I focus on these.

Stand out times at Cam for Cross and Track.

5k(3 miles)- 17:20
8k(5 miles)- 29:24

1500m(100m short of a mile) 4:22, 4:43 mile equalivent.

I consider myself a decent ruuner but by far not a great runner

I still have 2 years left so there is still much room for improvement.

At Cam, I am one nutrition class short of my Bach. in Health
Currently I am taking classes for my Masters in Education, which I should get by May 2010

My goals in life are be happy and have my friends and family close. But besides that, I would hope to be just well-off working a job I enjoy. I hope to work as Coach for a school on the reservation, my coaching abilities wouldnt just be limited to running because I do know other sports. I would like to try my hand at teaching or counseling. I have worked in Boys and Girls Clubs and possibly, I would like to run my own center. I have a great passion for health and training so maybe I would like to work as a public Health worker, working to implement community health programs and running wellness centers on the reservations. Working in or running a fitness gym is another one of my goals.

Hobbies
Drawing
Boxing- I am beginning to take this kind of serious and have been sparring at different gyms and finding out I have a "knack" for this and maybe just MAYBE, MIGHT do something with this
Comanche- I like learning and participating in my tribes traditions.

                                                   RANCE HOOD COMANCHE ARTIST

Rance Hood is one of the few Native American artists left who still paints in the manner which echoes the traditional Indian culture and spirituality of the past that has been drastically changed by the modern and white worlds. Hood grew up in the home of his maternal grandparents who taught him Comanche Indian ways and values. Hood has introduced some abstract motifs into his backgrounds, but he adheres mainly to the traditional style of art practiced by his ancestors. Today, thirty years beyond his original success as a major Indian artist in the 1960’s, RANCE HOOD is still considered the most successful Plains Indian artist. There is a storm center or animating force which charges Hood’s art with vitality. Hood’s storm center is his expression of his ancient tribal heritage, his visionary spiritual life, and a practicing mysticism. His themes are mystical, spiritual, developing his work through the customs and religious practices which were passed down to him. Coexisting with Hood’s control of the painting process is a mysticism that also distinguishes his work.

                          ABOUT ME

I am not of this world. I can sit here and tell you all about who and how great my family and ancestors are, but if I can't live as they have and do, then their lives and efforts are meaningless. I can also tell you where it is that I come from, say how proud I am to be what is it again? oh yeah Native American and tell all the things that I am and have done but here is the thing, what good is it if I can't "LIVE IT". My words could be beautiful, I may even look like a real indian but if my actions don't match with those so beautiful words then the Great Mystery will no longer see me for being a native, Lakota or foremost a Human Being. Then if it comes to that then what is life? Maybe that is why the children are lost and have no idea who they really are or know where they come from. Well I would die before I change my way of life and who I am to fit in this world or please people that don't want me to be what it is that I was created to be. I will live without fear in this day to give a beautiful way of life to those of tomorrow just as my Grandfathers, Grandmothers, Fathers and Mothers. I will be the living proof because I want to be. One can read, dig and look the world over to find themself but it would never be found because what it is that you are looking for is in the depths of your heart and beyond the stars. You must live without fear to find it. Yes I am LAKOTA. I was born one, so I shall live as one and I will die as not only a Lakota but a Human Being. I would like to ask all of you who are so proud to be native american. The lives and deaths of our ancestors what do they mean to you and how are you living in this day to show your thanks for what they have done and do for you and will your actions give life to those of tomorrow just as our ancestors had given you life? that is what a real Human Being would ask himself/herself with each new day that they are given. So live life without FEAR for the sake of tomorrow. Be a real Human Being and that is also for the non-natives that take the time to read this. So no more excusses! Jesus, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull, great human beings, why? because they never made an excuss, they just did, for who? YOU!!!! Don't let the good things of life end with you....I am who I am so who are you?.

                         THIRZA DEFOE

We are honored to have Thirza as our family friend, also our guest for May 2008 .We met Thirza at the Arlington Texas Indian Market where she performed her Hoop and Eagle dance,Thank you Thirza for being our special guest and family friend.

                         THIRZA

Thirza Defoe (Giizhiigoquay), a performer from the Ojibwe and Oneida tribes of Wisconsin, is widely known for her sacred hoop dancing that she has been performing since the age of 8. Dancing has taken her around the world to Spain, Japan, Egypt, and Italy. Her passion for acting has brought her to Los Angeles.

Thirza's repertoire consists of performances at the 2002 Grammy Awards held at the Kodak Theatre and the 2002 Native American Music Awards (NAMMYS) were she danced with contemporary Native American recording artists, Brule. Her many years as an accomplished hoop and eagle dancer have awarded her recognition in both the native community and throughout the world. In 1992, she danced in the opening ceremonies of the Olympics Games in Barcelona and celebrated the Millennium in Egypt in December of 1999 dancing with the Call for Peace Drum and Dance Company. She has been featured in the National Geographic World Magazine (August 1998) and has been hailed Wisconsin's Best Kept Secret by News from Indian Country: The Independent Native Journal.

The art of traditional storytelling and knowledge of the Ojibwe language was passed down to Thirza by her Ojibwe grandmother. She shares her culture and it's history through performances and presentations to students in elementary schools, high schools and colleges throughout the
United States
. She interacts closely with the audience while introducing them to Iroquois social songs, traditional flute music, storytelling, solo hoop dancing and people hoop dancing, uniting all in the circle.

Thirza is well versed in music, theater and dance. Her acting credits include the starring role and narrator in People of the Forest (PBS educational documentary), Helena in Midsummer Night's Dream, and most recently, Sacajawea in Stone Heart at the Autry Native Voices and a principal role in the independent film, Road Reps. As a versatile performer she played a young girl in Susan Lori-Parks', In the Blood along with composing and performing the soundtrack. Other credits include One Tribe Many Nations, a children's book that highlights Thirza. When not performing, she can be found pursuing her other interests: photography, playing guitar, writing, snowboarding and mentoring young native playwrights with the
Mentor Artists Performers Project (MAPP) and the Autry National Center
.

In May 2004 Thirza graduated from the world-renowned, California Institute of the Arts were she received her B.F.A. in Theatre. Later that year, She was
awarded the First Americans in the Arts Scholarship for students pursuing careers in acting and the Indigenous Heritage Festival award in the category of Performing Arts. This award is given to artists who have made a major positive impact on indigenous people and issues of the world. She is an artist-in-residence with the

                                        Instrument:   Piano, Electronic keyboards

Paul LaRoche (aka Brule') began performing at age 15. His early bands played a variety of musical styles and traveled the Midwest. His recording career was launched in 1975 with the release of his first solo LP. The 70's and 80's were scattered with musical ventures, engineering jobs, and years of raising his family with wife Kathy. For many of these years, Paul turned his attention to audio engineering and recording with a heavy emphasis on computer aided recording and music sequencing. As technology improved, Paul became proficient with analog and on digital audio recording software and hardware. In and out of over 15 bands over 20 years, Paul finally took a leave of absence from music in 1989. As fate would have it, Paul was reunited with biological Lakota family in 1993. His family, along with wife Kathy, encouraged Paul to re-enter the music industry this time as a cultural role model and "Brulé" was born.

Tribal Affiliation:  Lakota (Lower Brule Sioux)
                                             Instrument:  Classical flute

Nicole began playing the flute at age 11. She was a member of the Eden Prairie junior high school band and studied under the well-known flute instructor Judy Ranheim during high school. Nicole was accepted to perform with the Minneapolis Youth Symphony where she gathered her early stage experience. Classical music lost its appeal soon after high school, and Nicole teamed up with her father at Brule’s debut performance in St. Paul to a crowd of 20 patrons. Nicole has been performing with the band for the past six years, and her unique flute sound combines classical and traditional styles with a contemporary edge that has become the signature sound to the Brulé catalog.
